What is Discipline?
Discipline refers to practice which involves various actions that are regulated in ways which align those activities with a certain system of governance. It is an act of training oneself and others to work in ways which are in accordance with specific codes of conduct.
What is Discipline to me?
According to me, discipline is an essential activity which facilitates effective approach to deal with each situation systematically and appropriately. It is crucial as it provides a framework for individuals to work appropriately and timely achieve tasks.
Arguments for Discipline is Freedom
Jocko Willink, who has served in Navy for 20 years and is co-founder of Echelon Front, which is a highly recognised management and leadership consulting company, argues that Discipline and Freedom are quite connected. According to his view, the only way through which freedom in its truest sense could be achieved, Is through discipline. He relates each aspect related to time and finance in his argument and explain how managing these aspects would help individuals in achieving these aspects.

If discipline is absent in an individual' s personality, it is unlikely that they would control themselves. It gives freedom as it provides structure for working and opens up about aspects which are needed to be accomplished to achieve freedom. In addition to this, discipline provides mental as well as physical capabilities which results ultimately in achieving freedom.
Arguments against Discipline is Freedom
Opposite to the above argument, the counter argument exists in terms of discipline not equalling to freedom. According to Dr. Thomas Gordon, who is writer of the book, “Teaching Children Self-Discipline”, argues that there is a difference in self-discipline and imposed discipline. Moreover, there is also a difference between teaching and controlling. However, according to him, imposed discipline provokes negative aspects which fails a person in receiving freedom.
In addition to this, being disciplined states to conformation of norms, which restricts a person for being flexible in their thought process. Thus, it refrains them to effectively achieve their freedom. Furthermore, discipline also forces person to take decisions which are not self induced and thus, it does not equal to freedom.
According to me, discipline is absolutely essential for achieving freedom. There are various drawbacks of discipline which somehow restricts a person in achieving absolute freedom. However, to truly achieve the same, one must work towards developing habits that are in alignment with their goals for them to achieve freedom.
