“It takes a lot of bad writing to get a little good writing.”

Mistakes are bound to happen when students are writing their assignment, dissertation, homework, etc. But if these errors happen very often then you can lose your academic grades and spoil your career.

In this blog, we bring to you some of the common fallacies that scholars make in their writings every now and then. Take a glance through them:

1. Spelling Mistakes

Students do make errors when they are writing homophones (words with the same pronunciation) in a sentence. Examples can be “right”, “write” and “rite”. Spell-check may not identify such errors easily. You need to be very careful while using such words.

2. No Comma Before the Conjunction

If you are doing this, then your sentence becomes a run-on sentence. Remember, you always need to use a comma before a coordinating conjunction connecting two clauses. Let’s take an example,

Incorrect: My keys were lost but I was too lazy to search for them.

Correct: My keys were lost, but I was too lazy to search for them.

Here, the two clauses before and after the conjunction could be two independent sentences. Therefore, we insert a comma before the conjunction.

3. Wordy Sentences

Your writing is unclear if your sentence is using more words than necessary to convey the meaning. This is called wordiness. To make your writing more clear, identify long phrases that can be replaced by a single word and eliminate weak words, such as “sort of”, “in order to”, “basically”. Example could be,

“Jack provided an explanation of computer to his father.”
The above sentence can be improved as,
“Jack explained the computer to his father.”

4. Subject-Verb Agreement

Subjects and verbs should agree with one another in number. A singular subject takes a singular verb and a plural subject takes a plural one. You should be able to find the right subject and verb to reduce this kind of error in your writing. As an example consider the following,

Incorrect: A bunch of roses lend color and fragrance to the room.

Correct: A bunch of roses lends color and fragrance to the room.

Here, if you know that “bunch” is the subject, then you will use “lend” as the verb and not “lends”.

5. Sentence Fragments

Some sentences are incomplete because they lack either the subject or the verb, or both. These are called sentence fragments. To improve the sentence, you will have to add a subject or a verb to the fragment as needed. Take a look at the following example:

Incorrect: An epic all-nighter!

Correct: It was an epic all-nighter!

So now you know the top 5 mistakes that students commit while writing. Next time when you sit to write an assignment do notice these errors. This will help you to improve the quality of your writings and score better grades.
