Inventions That Were Made by Mistake27 Nov, 2017 5058
When you hear the word invention, the first thing that strikes your mind is that the scientist who is credited for it would have conducted years and years of research. Well, in most of the cases it’s true but you’ll be glad to know that it’s not like that every time. Science is a strange field and you never know what it has in store for you. In this blog, we bring you a list of such great inventions that brought about revolution in the entire world, but weren’t a by-product of research rather, they were hunches or mistakes that turned out to be successful.

The microwave oven
One of the most common kitchen appliances that you’ll find everywhere is a microwave oven. It holds a great significance because of its operational diversity as it can perform various tasks such as cooking, baking, roasting, shallow-frying, dry heating, etc. In the year 1945, scientist named Perry Spencer while conducting experiments on a few vacuum tubes and magnatron realized that a popcorn kernel suddenly popped when it came under the influence of the apparatus. He grabbed a few more kernels and saw that they all cooked in few seconds. This gave him the idea to create a device that used high frequency electromagnetic waves to generate heat, and this is how the microwave was invented.
X-Ray imaging has a great significance in the field of medicine but it was an accidental invention. German physicist Röntgen, while working with cathode rays observed an invisible light ray producing a green glow on the display screen. He noticed that it had astonishing penetration strength and could pass through plenty of objects. He carried out various experiments post that and successfully created an X-ray image of his wife’s hand. This is how X-ray imaging was introduced to the world.
You can’t deny the fact that potato chips are the most popular snack in the world. The story of its invention dates back to 1853, when a customer in a New York diner kept on sending his fried potatoes back to the chef in order to get thinner and deep fried pieces. Out of anger, the chef sliced them like a paper and fried until they got crisp. Little did he knew that it would become a sensation in just one month. Since then potato wafers became globally popular.
The story behind the invention of firework is quite old almost around 2100 years. Historians believe that the ancient cooking style consisted of bamboo sticks and wooden vessels and one day a cook who worked for the royalty accidentally mixed Sulphur and Charcoal along with salt, and as soon as he kept the tube filled with it over the fire it burst. The story ended tragically, but firecrackers were invented.
Artificial pacemaker is a tiny device that is surgically planted inside the body of patients who suffer from cardiac disorders to maintain a perfect heart rate. An electrical engineer named Wilson Greatbatch while trying to create a heart rate recorder accidentally came up with a design that could generate rhythmic signals just like heart. His device was quite small in size and had operational efficiency which made it the first-ever pacemaker that could maintain cardiac speed.
